DJ LIGHT s an immersive public sound and light installation that gives visitors the power to orchestrate an awe-inspiring performance of light and sound across a large public space. It was created for energy company Endesa as the cornerstone of their Christmas celebrations in Lima, Peru. DJ Light is about the exhilaration of one person taking control over a massive space and manipulating the incredible array of light and sound within it using nothing more than their own body. It is an empowering experience where the public is invited to be the artist.

MATERIALS

85 giant globes of light, LED lighting.

TECHNOLOGY

The main controlling hardware and software utilised for DJ Light was made especially for the project, and combines years of on-going research and development. Suspended above the podium is a high accuracy thermal tracking camera that has been developed by Cinimod to allow for live tracking of the “guest DJ”. By tracking every movement of the person below, this camera communicates control signals to the main software programme that is responsible for the live sound and light generation.

EFFECT

The performance hoped to explore the social magnetism of light and its mysterious ability to draw strangers together.

SOLAR FLARE: an interactive light sculpture

The sculpture involves public space, contextual scale, and environmental conditions. It was installed at a busy pedestrian walkway during winter and after fiddling it with animated LEDs, one large light bulb inside the belly of the sun was put to have an analogue approach. The bulb is surrounded by a rotating tin cylinder with holes cut out of it, geared to a small electric motor that is activated by motion sensors placed on either side of Stephen Avenue walkway. When tripped, either one of the motion sensors switches the motor to 3-volt rotational speed, creating a slow glimmer of light on the surface of the sculpture for a matter of seconds. The transformers were wired in series, meaning that when both motion detectors are simultaneously tripped, the motor switches to a 9-volt setting, and the sculpture shimmers rapidly, a reflection of the surrounding action.

6a030_NEON-House-of-Peroni-1
NEON House is an interactive DJ booth created for resident DJ Alessio Natalizia from the band Walls. The work was done for the House of Peroni and explores the connection between music and architecture and the idea that a performance venue can be part of the performance itself. The design consists of a simple steel cube frame from which radiates 2km of glowing UV fluorescent nylon string. The geometry of the string defines within the cube a space from where Alessio will perform, simultaneously transforming the installation into a giant inhabitable harp. Electronic sensors within the strings respond to human touch, allowing the audience to collaborate with the DJ, creating new sounds and influencing the musical output.

Juergen_Albrecht_Skulpturen_mit_Kunst-_und_Tageslicht_ Jürgen-Albrecht Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

The works of Jurgen Albrecht are abstract compositions, whose colours range from impenetrable black to bright white. They are neither picture nor object but three-dimensional fields which only exist in the light. Their initial point is the architectural space they are located in. Precisely tared light projections, crossfades and cloudings create spatial contexts which are – just as stage rooms – an illusion. Inside and outside are fading into each other. Open and closed spaces are shifting in conflict. Daylight and artificial light are changing their function in the description of spatial contexts as well as shades and shades of light. Optical illusions of interlaced interiors are emerging from the aesthetic challenge of habits of perception. It is a visual labyrinth in which the dual nature of light is reflected as material and immaterial phenomenon.

Space in light as an open, endless space in the visual interplay with
tangible and restricted space is also the theme of the work in Luedenscheid
“Universalis”. It contains seven cubes. Their material and formal structure is modelled by projected light. The white cubes are just as well convoluted as light incidence and reflexion. The basic relation of light, space and
perception is becoming an object of aesthetic contemplation and the interplay creates a spatial picture puzzle. Meanwhile the idea of the “White Cube” as
abstracted space is changing into a space that contains everything.

TEDDY LO: “LIGHTNING IS ESSENTIAL TO LIFE AND THIS REALITY, I WANT TO MASTER THIS BASIC AND PRIMITIVE COMMUNICATION THROUGH THE VISIBLE MAGNETIC SPECTRUM AND TRANSFER MY FEELING OR MESSAGE THROUGH LIGHTING TO MY VIEWERS. THE CHALLENGE FOR ME IS TO DESIGN IT’S FORM, IT’S BEHAVIOUR AND THE OVERALL VISUAL EXPERIENCE TOWARDS THE VIEWER. I AM INTERESTED IN EXPLORING WAYS TO TAP INTO PEOPLE’S PSYCHE AND LEAVE A LONG LASTING IMPRESSION.”

Jeongmoon Choi

Geboren in Korea, woont momenteel in Berlijn, Duitsland.

Pablo Valbuena develops artistic projects and research focused on space, time and perception. Born in Spain and currently based in the south of France.

Some key elements of this exploration are the overlap of the physical and the virtual, the generation of mental spaces by the observer, the dissolution of the boundaries between real and
perceived, the links between space and time, the primacy of
subjective experience as a tool to communicate and the use of light as prime matter.

These ideas are mostly developed site-specific, formulated as a direct response to the perceptual qualities, physical conditions and surrounding influences of a certain location or space.

This body of work has been presented in public and private
institutions, biennials and galleries in the form of exhibitions, site-specific commissions and large-scale public interventions throughout Europe, Asia and America.

LED screen / ProjectieTECHNIEK
EFFECT
“I always thought moving images are very versatile. They are energy based, not atom based, just like music. You can listen to a song at home, while you run, in a club, or in a huge stadium.
It doesn’t change the song, it does change the experience.”
